1. 500 g is the weight you'll actually control

2. Cross-peen: the two jobs a beginner does most

The flat face planishes, flattens and finishes — smoothing hammer marks and truing a surface.

The wedge-shaped peen draws out and spreads metal in one direction, which is how you make a taper, start a leaf, or move stock without thinning it everywhere at once. Between them they cover most of what a first year at the anvil asks for: scrolls, leaves, hooks, tapers and fine detail.

3. A handle that grips when your hands don't

A moulded fibreglass handle with a deep textured non-slip grip and a flared end, so it stays put in a hot, sweaty, gloved hand. Fibreglass also soaks up far more of the shock than bare wood, and unlike a wooden handle it won't dry out, shrink or work loose in a hot shop — the classic way a hammer head ends up flying across the room.

4. The right first hammer, or the right second one

If you already own a heavy forging hammer, this is the one you'll pick up for everything delicate — the detail work a big hammer simply cannot do.
